Thriving farming communities in Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement: Jafar Omondi’s story

In the sunny Village Four of Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement in Yumbe district lies a flourishing garden of collard greens popularly known as sukuma and cabbages.  Jafar Omondi, a 46-year-old father of six, weeds this garden alongside his wife and four other colleagues. When asked if it is not too hot to be working, he responds with a hearty laugh. “It is worth it! This garden must be taken care of because it is making money for every single person here.”

Phillip Ochan, 27 had hoped to return home sooner, but the prolonged civil war in South Sudan forced him to extend his stay in Uganda's refugee settlement for eight years. During this time, he found a new home in Village 14 Zone 1 in Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement and married Betty Ngonga. Together, they have a two-year-old son named Emmanuel.

45 kms from Yumbe town in the under-served village of Limika, Romogi sub-county, you will find one of the most engaging under-a-tree classrooms. Led by Onzia Rabi, a dedicated 22-year-old teacher, who is passionate about educating young children, the class, characterized by singing and dancing, is quite popular with children under six years.

Enid Kyarisiima, 32, a mother of one is a famer who lives in Mukondo C Village, Kyegegwa District. She’s a dedicated caregiver (teacher) at Lucky Nursery School in Mukondo C Zone, nestled in the heart of the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement in Kyegegwa District.
